south hams Ivybridge is located in South Devon, in the South-West of England, and was first mentioned in 1280 as a 'dowry of land on the west side of the River Erme, by the Ivy Bridge'. This bridge, pictured here, continued to serve as the only means of crossing the river until 1819, when the new bridge joining Exeter Road and Fore Street was built.

ivybridgeIn 1848 the Great Western Railway arrived on its way to Cornwall, and the Ivybridge viaduct, based on a design by Brunel, was seen as an engineering masterpierce, the piers of which can be seen behind the present viaduct.
